Finding a Wedding Gown

By: julie vincetti

He's proposed and it is time to make a decision on the most important detail of every little girl's dream: the wedding dress. Should it be sleeveless, short, long, lacey, sequined or plain? So many questions to ask yourself, although you are sure of one thing, it needs to be perfect.

As soon as the planning begins for the big day, choosing your wedding dress becomes somewhat of an urgency for most brides, who do not want to wait until the last minute. While dealing with wedding stress and preparations, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to try on different styles and find the one who says "you".

Have you chosen to have a themed wedding? If so, this will be a major key to your wedding dress selection. Will your wedding be set outside in a sunny climate? If so, you will need to select something light and airy to keep you comfortable throughout the ceremony. Are you going for a traditional style wedding? Then you will want a white or cream dress with lots of silk and plenty of lace. Regardless of any theme to your wedding, your dress will play one of the most important parts in ensuring that the overall effect is achieved.

Another important factor is what time of year are you planning to get married. If you are getting married in the height of summer, you will not want a dress with multiple layers and full length sleeves. Your wedding should be full of happy memories from the ceremony. You do not want to be thinking about how hot you got on your wedding day but rather how hot you looked in your wedding dress.

When choosing a wedding dress, try on comfortable styles. Walk around in them, if kneeling is part of your ceremony, then kneel in the dress and be sure you are not going to be uncomfortable in your choice.

How good the dress looks is only 50% of choosing the dress. The other 50% is whether you look good in the dress. You will not be able to look good if your dress is scratchy or if it is a bit tight and you are afraid you might split a seam.

A major problem often encountered when buying a wedding dress is with getting the correct size. Even if you are planning to tone your body up prior to your wedding, it is better to get your dress for the size you are today. This way if you lose some weight whilst waiting for your wedding day, it will be easier to adjust the wedding dress by taking it in rather than having to try to add material to it.

You may be tempted to try to cut costs by picking a cheaper style dress than you would like. You would be much better cutting costs on the flowers, cake, photography and getting family and friends to do these for you, since your wedding dress will be the main focus of your day. If you are not able to spend the type of money required by a wedding boutique, try looking at wedding consignment shops as these often have great quality nearly new dresses at a fraction of the cost of a brand new one.

Regardless of the wedding dress you finally end up choosing, remember that you are the person that your fianc wants to marry, not the dress. The dress is only used to ensure you look your best on the day.

After you have chosen your wedding dress hang it in the bag it comes in and do not over show it. Give guests something to look forward to as they see you for the first time walking down the aisle. And unless it is unavoidable, do not let your future husband see your dress at all before the wedding. It's bad luck!
